I am Faye Barta. I have lived in West Hills for over 30 years, but I was born and reared in Youngstown, Ohio, formerly a booming “steel town”. I earned my B.A. degree magna cum laude from Youngstown (now State) University, majoring in English and Latin with a minor in Education. I taught high school English and Latin and middle school for four years in Ohio. After moving to Los Angeles in 1970, I earned my M.A. in Education from CSUN. I worked for LAUSD as a part-time ESL teacher at Evans Community Adult School for 9 years. While there, I obtained my law degree from UCLA School of Law in 1978. After passing the State bar, I worked as an attorney for three law firms, then started my own solo practice in 1988. I retired on October 31, 2016 (my favorite holiday!) after 37 years of practicing mostly bankruptcy law.
I am one of the founders and am co-captain of the Highlander Pomelo Neighborhood Watch. We have worked with LAPD and have been quite successful in maintaining a very low crime rate in our ‘hood.
In mid-2016, LAUSD proposed building a 532-student performing arts high school on Highlander Rd.at the site of the former Highlander Rd. Elementary School. Our neighbors and HPNW vehemently opposed (and are still opposed to) such a school, citing major traffic and safety concerns. I sought the help and support of WHNC and was very happy, proud and excited to have WHNC support our efforts to block such a school.
In so doing, I became very impressed by and quite interested in the work of WHNC and its Board members’ efforts not only to protect West Hills but also to help make it the best community it can be. I decided I wanted to help the Board with its work. In spring of 2017, I became a voting stakeholder member of four committees—Beautification, Senior/Community Center, Streets and Transportation, and Zoning and Planning. I was elected to the Board on 09/07/2017. I intend to work diligently to help WHNC in all its community efforts so that WHNC will continue to be the best neighborhood council in the City of Los Angeles and West Hills will be the best community it can be.
